When Talking “Dirty” is No Longer Sexy

I’m embarrassed.  I’m ashamed.  I’m miffed. No, I don’t have sexual incompatability issues with my husband. No, I haven’t overheard my 9-year old whispering seductive words to her friend on the subway. I’m horrified that I’ve been using fruits and vegetables laden with pesticides and rancid chemicals and you-name-it in my children’s diet --without really thinking about it.  I live in New York City.  All you have to do is step outside your apartment door and shop from the random fruit and vegetable vendor who is camped on every dirty … [Read more...]

Judy’s Black Bottom Cupcakes: far from rock bottom

Today ranks in THE TOP 5 HARDEST EXPERIENCES I’ve ever had as a parent.  I sent my “baby” off to sleep away camp in Maine.  I know this was a choice that we made so I can’t whine.  But, there’s something so wretched about loosening the “grip” on your child, watching them wave to you through the tinted windows of the bus, only to turn their head and vanish into the summer.  Knowing this day would come, we carefully scheduled a weekend chock-full of family activities.  We wanted to eek out as much quality time together as humanly possible.  First … [Read more...]

Teaching Your Kids to Make Lemonade from Lemons

"You only live once, but, if you do it right, once is enough"- Mae West. This past weekend we traveled to Baltimore for Father’s Day.  It’s the only weekend this entire summer we’ll be in town so inevitably every second is mapped out.  That’s one of the challenges with marrying your high-school sweetheart—we’re constantly shuttling ourselves between two sets of families (who live 5 miles apart) trying to play fair to both.  Over the years things have gotten much better.  We no longer switch between houses each night.  We unload our bags and … [Read more...]
