Green Beans with Shallot Sauce

My family is on Spring Break right now.  We decided to head out west on vacation and explore the desert as well as the natural wonders of the Grand Canyon.- which I must say is truly breathtaking.  The word Grand does not do this scenery justice. While the nature hikes and the horseback rides and the desert exploration have all been invigorating, the food has been underwhelming. Forget about the vegetable selection.  If you count dry iceberg lettuce slathered with ranch dressing or coleslaw swimming in oil as vegetables, then you’ll be right at … [Read more...]

Honey Glazed Crock Pot Chicken

Just because the weather's getting warmer and spring is literally around the corner doesn't mean that your slow cooker needs to be stowed away until next winter.  Before my ventures into slow cookery, the crock pot was synonymous with heavy, hearty stews and calorie-laden dishes (read wintertime).  However, there are plenty of dishes that won't bust your gut but will satiate your appetite. Yesterday morning I literally stumbled upon a sponge cake recipe of Mom's: Hot Milk Sponge Cake (not to be confused with her generational Passover Sponge Cake that requires the addition of matzoh meal and the deletion of milk).  I … [Read more...]

World’s Best Irish Soda Bread

What's a Jewish girl doing with her Mom's Irish Soda Bread recipe?  NOTHING. But, my mom does have an insane amount of generational recipes in the section I cataloged "Jewish Judy."  Some of these recipes are so torn, faded and damaged, it's as though they survived the battlefields of Word War I.  With Passover right around the corner, I simply can't wait to roll up my sleeves and start exploring! But, we're not talking Passover just yet.  We're talking St. Patrick's Day! And, like I said, I'm Jewish.  Unfortunately for … [Read more...]
